- W2324256413 abstract "The Enhanced Gaseous Nitrogen Dewar (EGN) apparatus resulted from a desire to maximize the number of protein crystal growth samples by greatly simplifying the hardware. Previously flown hardware required bulky and expensive growth cells, mechanical and electrical activation systems and crew time to perform these duties. The EGN is based upon a liquid nitrogen Dewar already in the NASA inventory. Growth cells are simply Tygon tubing sealed with the same tubing sealer commonly used in blood banks. Protein and precipitating agents are kept separate in free-interface diffusion experiments merely by stepwise freezing. Activation occurs automatically upon thawing once the charge of liquid nitrogen is exhausted. Beta cloth sample bags an aluminum pressure vessel for containment, temperature sensors and data logging electronics complete the configuration. The simple nature of the growth cells allows great flexibility in experimental design for the investigator. Different sample volumes and equilibration rates are easily accommodated by the selection of tubing diameter. Samples can be prepared months in advance and launch scrubs are easily accommodated by refreshing the charge of liquid nitrogen. The relative ease of sample preparation and low cost have allowed an educational outreach program to be developed based on this hardware." @default.
