- W2324442502 abstract "Ghrelin and obestatin are orexigenic and anorexigenic peptides, respectively, that are secreted from the stomach mucosa into the circulation. It is therefore suggested that the delicate balance of ghrelin and obestatin is important in the regulation of energy homeostasis and body-weight control. Eevidence indicates that resistance exercise is an effective component of exercise recommendations for weight control. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to clarify the possible mechanisms of resistance training in energy homeostasis and weight control. METHODS: Twenty-seven female college students, means±SE age 22±1.54 y and body mass index 20.76±1.86 kg/m2, were randomly assigned to experimental or control groups. Subjects in experimental groups performed a circuit-resistance training protocol with either 40% or 80% 1-RM loads for 4 weeks. Circulating levels of total ghrelin, obestatin, ghrelin to obestatin ratio and glucose were measured before and after the 4- week interventions for all subjects. RESULTS: One-way ANOVAs revealed a significantly (P<0.05) higher post- training change in circulating ghrelin to obestatin ratio, moreover, plasma obestatin concentrations significantly decreased (P<0.05) in the 80% 1-RM group, but no significant differences were observed in plasma total ghrelin (P=0.88) and glucose (P=0.1) in experimental groups when compared with control group. CONCLUSIONS: Data suggest that resistance training-induced energy deficit in the 80% 1-RM group resulted ghrelin/- obestatin preprohormone favoring production of ghrelin. Thus, obestatin and compensate for lost energy sources, eventually restoring the body's energy balance." @default.
