- W2324616268 abstract "In Reply: We appreciate Dr. McKendree's comments about our recent article. She expresses two concerns: Can brain data tell us anything novel about high-level learning? And will brain research be supported at the expense of social and behavioral research? We and our coauthors recognize the value of supporting multifaceted, interdisciplinary research approaches to better understand effective learning and teaching strategies. In fact, our article makes the case for the importance of integrating multiple levels of study, including behavior, social cognition, imaging, and neurobiology. Indeed, the great advances of modern neuroscience are based on such multidisciplinary strategies. There are numerous examples of the utility of an integrative research approach. For example, new insights into the role of imitation and action-recognition in cognitive functions have emerged from the study of the biology of mirror systems. These systems were first described in the primate brain and are now understood to have antecedents in a diverse range of species.1 Similarly, studying social learning in the context of biological mechanisms with input from economics to anthropology2 has provided new understanding of strategies of learning in the framework of cognitive decision making. Functional brain imaging studies of social cognition and decision making constitute a powerful new approach to these processes.3 Other areas of notable achievements in the study of higher-order cognitive processes include the biological substrates and strategies for reward learning modulation through the brain's computing of valuation,4 mechanisms of attention processes that enhance retrieval of learned representations,5 and the biology of modulation of prosocial decisions by social factors, including group participation.6 In summary, we agree on the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to understanding how learning works but also strongly support the value added by the modern neuroscientific approach.
