- W2324658052 abstract "The comparative smallness of the Roman Catholic community in Victorian England and the feelings of political and ideological insecurity which flowed from such a situation induced among its members an unusual degree of concern for both the theoretical and the practical problems associated with the relationship between Roman church and English state. With few exceptions the majority of those who were able and prepared to express views on such matters were converts from Anglicanism, many of them being disciples of John Henry Newman. Prominent among such converts was William George Ward (1812-1882), who as fellow of Balliol College, Oxford, between 1834 and 1845 had exercised his powerful intellect in the cause of bringing the Church of England closer to a Catholic position. After his own conversion in 1845 he remained an active contro versialist and became an enthusiastic supporter of the cause of Ultramontanism (as manifested particularly by absolute obedi ence to the papacy and an espousal of the newly revived con servative theology and philosophy then finding favor at the Vatican). As editor from 1863 to 1878 of the intellectual Catholic periodical, the Dublin Review, he acted as the Ultra montane hammer of Catholics who favored a more liberal view of" @default.
