- W2324763357 abstract "A number of philosophers have argued that states attributed in the cognitive sciences are, or ought to be, fixed by internal states of the individual subject. I shall call this view individualism. More precisely, the view is that any imagined pair of creatures who share all their internal physical, phenomenal, dispositional, and functional states, insofar as these can be described non-intentionally and without reference to the environment, must share all their psychologically relevant intentional states.1 I wish to consider whether work in artificial intelligence (Al) conforms to this stricture. Thus Al constitutes a case study for the question whether the cognitive sciences should be individualistic in their presuppositions.2 In particular, I shall focus on Terry Winograd's influential program SHRDLU, which understands natural language. Winograd's work has interest in this context beyond its value as a case study, for Jerry Fodor explicitly points to SHRDLU in support of what he calls methodological solipsism.3 Methodological solipsism, in Fodor's usage, is not to be conflated with psychological individualism, though in the wider literature the terms are frequently used interchangeably. In Fodor's work, solipsism appears as a complement to the formality condition, according to which psychological processes apply to representations solely in virtue of the shapes of such representations. Methodological solipsism is the negative side of this thesis; it is the view that psychological processes have no access to semantic properties of the representations to which they apply. In particular, psychological processes have no access to properties such" @default.
