- W2324779300 abstract "This study concerns the roles and activities of parliamentary politicians in Singapore at two levels: the national legislature and the constituency. Four roles are defined within the dominant one-party system: the technocrat, mobiliser, Malay votegetter, and Chinese-educated intellectual. The social and political backgrounds of MPs adopting these roles are explored. At the constituent level, a survey of five districts shows that MPs' activity is closely related to that of the party and that MPs provide an important link between the government and the constituents. Legislators have not been the most glamourous or compelling subjects of study in developing countries. Whilst soldiers and charismatic leaders stride the scene, parliamentary politicians where they exist are considered the supporting cast for the main protagonists. If they are objects of analysis at all, the usual approach is that of elite studies or what is commonly known as the sociology of leadership method, focusing on the recruitment pattern of political leaders, their social origins, education, occupation, and club membership; the theoretical assumption here is that social origins predict policy preferences. Some studies now explore the attitudes of parliamentary politicians and the significance of this for prospects of stable democratic government (Kim and Woo, 1973). An interesting and illuminating approach has been taken by Raymond Hopkins (1970) in his research on the Bunge or National Assembly of Tanzania. He focused on the role of the Member of Parliament in the system in order to understand the legislative process, the elite political culture, and the pattem of politics which the culture supports. Hopkins is, of course, indebted, as are a number of American students of national and state legislatures, to Wahlke, Eulau, Buchanan and Ferguson (1962) for their seminal work which drew attention to the analysis of legislative roles. To a sociologist, a role refers to the pattern of expectations and norms of behaviour that are associated with a position in the social structure. The usage of the concept in this paper will refer to some aspects of role which include the expectations of others, the orientations of the individual occupying the role position, and the actual behaviour of the individual.1 Wahlke et al. demonstrated that legislators had differing concepts" @default.
