- W2324882669 abstract "T he Huntington Library possesses copy of curious and very rare eighteenth-century Dublin builder's manual titled, alternatively, The Builders Guide or The Carpenter's Plain and Exact Rule. Although the book was first published in 1738, with variant of the second of these titles, the volume at the Huntington is one of only two known copies from an edition of 1758, the earliest surviving edition. The other 1758 copy also found its way to the United States and is now held in the science collection of the Detroit Public Library. One other edition, undated but likely produced after 1767, survives in the National Library of Ireland and elsewhere. This odd little volume offers fresh insight into the eighteenth-century Dublin book trade, in particular its plagiarism of works published in England. As the British copyright act of 1709 did not extend to Ireland, the reprinting of English titles in Dublin was commonplace.1 Accusations of piracy abounded among members of the London book trade, who feared that reprints would be smuggled into England. Initially bibles and almanacs were the staple of the reprint trade, but by the 176os all kinds of texts were being pirated, from novels to travel literature to legal reference works and builder's copy-books. Two such copy-books were issued by the Dublin publisher James Williams, a dedicated worker in the smuggling trade to Britain: two editions, in 1766 and 1768, of Batty and Thomas Langley's The Builders'Jewel, and in 1768 Francis Price's The British Carpenter.2 However, apart from an ingenious saving in copper-plates in his editions of Langley, which reduced the size of the original illustrations, the builder's" @default.
