- W2324918339 abstract "O NE OF THE least discussed and most important influences on the artistic development of Hugo von Hofmannsthal in the crucial years from 1893 to 1903 is that of Robert Browning's works. In these years, Hofmannsthal developed from a lyric to a dramatic poet, from an adolescent prodigy to a mature artist. Hofmannsthal began reading Browning's poems at the age of eighteen and was still reading them in his fifties.l In these works, he found all the elements he needed to develop his own dramas from the early lyric subjective type to the later fully developed type: the positive attitude toward life and society, the love for Italy he himself felt, the Renaissance or Byzantine background he was interested in in his youth, the deep comprehension of the role of the true artist as opposed to the man who misuses his talents, an amazing array of fully-dimensioned characters, and a new and exciting combination of the lyric and dramatic forms." @default.
