- W2324956863 abstract "Professor Malcolm and I clearly baffle one another. I took her advocacy from her own statements. She frames her work with a defense of an absolutist reading of the Second Amendment. Her book's opening paragraph notes that the right to bear arms lies at the very heart of the relationship between the individual and his fellows, and between the individual and his government. And that right is currently under vigorous assault (p. ix). Malcolm concludes her book by stating that no restriction on the right to bear arms is allowable without a constitutional amendment (176). Everything between seems to me determined by a clearly established insistence on preserving unrestricted access to firearms. In return, Malcolm writes that my comments are motivated by an equally pointed advocacy. I invite Malcolm to tell me what that bias may be, as I own several firearms, which I have never had any trouble acquiring (in fact the NRA just invited me to take part in their Jackpot O Guns sweepstakes, with $40,000 worth of guns up for grabs), consider myself knowledgeable of their use and development, and have never written in favor of or opposition to unrestricted gun ownership. Nowhere in my review do I question Malcolm's integrity. As any good scholar does, Malcolm provides the material for alternative readings of her evidence (to quote myself) and I offer such, which I take to be an appropriate role for a book review. For instance, Malcolm writes that about various highwaymen and women illustrate not only the invariable use of pistols but how easy it apparently was to acquire these weapons (82). All I asked in my review was that we go beyond the legends and inquire into the reality of crime in the seventeenth and eighteenth century. Just because a member of the upper class complains that the roadways are controlled by armed banditti does not make it so. Scholars as diverse as E. P. Thompson, Ian Gilmour, and P. B. Munsche have noted the paucity of firearms, not their ubiquity. Parliament may have ordered the consortium of eastern counties ... to raise 20,000 men with" @default.
