- W2324965589 abstract "Nailed wall is used to support both temporary and permanent structures. The objective of this study is to propose a simplified method of design of nailed soil wall based on experimental investigation and analysis through program SNAILZ. Experimental investigations are carried and to find the influence of nail rigidity number in the failure surface and nail displacement. A simplified method for optimum design of nailed soil wall is proposed based on Nail Rigidity Number (Juran 1990). The SNAILZ program is used to check the validity of proposed method. BACKGROUND Soil nailing is currently adopted as a cut slope retaining system, generally in non-plastic soils. The design methods that have been mostly used are Davis (Mitchel, 1987) German(Stocker and Riedinger, 1990) and French (Schlosser et.al., 1992) methods, on which the limit equilibrium approaches, are used. Recently, a kinematical limit equilibrium design method has been proposed by Juran (1990) and Byrne(1992). This method provide estimated value of maximum tensile and shear forces mobilized in each reinforcement In Juran method, the normal stress distribution along the failure surface is evaluated by using kotter’s equation. Hence, the method has the advantage that a force developed in each nail can be obtained from horizontal force equilibrium of the slice including a nail. However, there is a possibility of argument on the ambiguity of the boundary condition in applying kotter’s equation and the vertical force equilibrium. Some of the failure surface used for analysis is linear, bilinear with a two wedge slipping mass, parabolic, logspiral and circular. Numerical comparisons among different methods show that differences in the geometry of the failure surface do not result in a significant difference in the calculated factor of safety. The nail lengths were obtained based on the failure surface and for the some target factor of safety based on the frictional resistance of soil." @default.
