- W2324982723 abstract "Tenebrionid beetles (Zophobas morio) from Peru were experimentally infected with eggs of Macracanthorhynchus hirudinaceus from China. A de- fense reaction of the beetles against the acanthella and cystacanth of the parasite was observed by means of transmission electron microscopy. Beginning at 1 wk postinfection, many hemocytes of the infected beetles were found adhering to the outer surface of the enve- lope that encloses the acanthella. Some of the host's hemocytes penetrated the envelope and attached to the tegument of the acanthella and cystacanth, so that the outer membrane of the larval tegument was damaged. Starting at 50 days postinfection some of the cysta- canths were seen to disintegrate." @default.
