- W2325052610 abstract "The sustainable utilization of regenerative geothermal energy is a meaningful contribution to face the challenges of countering climate change. In Central Europe a large future growth is expected for decentralized shallow geothermal systems (e.g. in Austria it is expected, that 50% of new buildings will use a ground source or ground water heat pump for heating in future). But currently in Central Europe, less than 1% of the heating demand is covered with geothermal heat pumps. Different geothermal potentials indicate that up to about 30% of the energy for room heating and hot water can be provided with shallow geothermal energy. But there are challenging tasks to reliably determine technical potentials of shallow geothermal energy utilization or underground heat management plans. In this work numerical experiments are used to identify both, important and not negligible issues in assessments of such geothermal potentials. It is shown that uncritical assumptions for individual systems can have a significant impact on assessment of a regional potential in densely populated areas." @default.
