- W2325135481 abstract "This volume brings to fruition the author's almost four decades of research on the life and reign of the Habsburg ruler. Professor Beales's engagement with Joseph dates back to a 1975 article re-examining the authenticity of letters attributed to Joseph and often cited by historians as evidence of his debt to Enlightenment philosophy. Not every scholar had been taken in by the forgery, and Joseph's Russian biographer, Paul Mitrofanov, dismissed the letters altogether. But their uncritical acceptance by biographers such as Saul Padover continued to colour interpretations of Joseph and his reign. Beales's first-rate piece of philological detective work dispelled any lingering doubts that most of the letters in question, originally published in the final year of Joseph's reign, were spurious and probably written by a pro-government pamphleteer and police spy. If the letters were largely an invention, who then was the ‘real’ Joseph? Beales's first volume, published in 1987 (rev. ante, ciii [1988], 990–94), covered the period up to the death of Maria Theresa and focused on Joseph's important but neglected achievements as co-regent. As in his 1975 essay, Beales played down the direct influence of Enlightenment thought. He described instead a conscientious and knowledgeable statesman whose views grew not out of books, but from extensive travels and far-reaching reform proposals debated in the Council of State during the latter period of his mother's reign. Beales's Joseph was also a frustrated and insecure individual moulded, and even scarred, by his ambiguous relationship with his mother, a man who craved popularity and was obsessed with the impression he made on others." @default.
