- W2325182007 abstract "In 1978 Piper Verlag published a four-volume edition of Ingeborg Bachmann's works, including the fragments which were to complete the already published Malina as a novel-cycle called Todesarten. Also in this edition are sketches and fragmentary scenes involving the figure Malina, and explanatory notes from the editors regarding their handling and ordering of this previously unpublished material. The order of the Todesarten-cycle established by the editors as the final intention of Bachmann is, after Malina, Requiem fuir Fanny Goldmann, which began as a story outside the realm of the novel-cycle, but was eventually to be included as the second part; and Der Fall Franza, the earliest of the trilogy whose title was chosen by the editors out of several suggested in Bachmann's notes.' Franza is the more fully developed of the two fragments, though breaking off in parts, or indecipherable to the editors in others; but in any event, more an object of literary speculation than of analysis. Indeed, any in-depth study of such fragments beyond a relating of the content must of necessity be acknowledged as limited by the incompleteness of the trilogy as a whole; and yet, there is enough substantial framework and suggestion of motifs in the two incomplete novels and the sketches to support a coherence of form and thematic material which not only relates to Malina, but also provides a context which augments our understanding of this highly complex work. The lengthier analysis is, therefore, devoted to Malina as a completed novel which maintains its integrity as an individual literary accomplishment, followed by a more speculative consideration of the fragments and their contribution to an enlarged-if only potential--perspective through which to approach Malina. 1971 was the year in which Malina first appeared, a year which might well have been too early in the decade to allow a favorable response to a novel dealing with the breakdown of the self. This was a year in which a critic could still speak pejoratively about die Geschichte einer Neurose;2 and yet, Bachmann's novel with its intensively interiorized perspective proved to be a precursor of the Neue Innerlichkeit novels of the 1970's, and an early proclamation of the intention to explore the self in a neurotic world. Works written in the first person, dealing with inner crises-apparently based on autobiographical materials-eventually" @default.
