- W2325298447 abstract "(1) The competitive interaction between Acacia karroo trees and herbaceous plants in a semi-arid savanna was investigated by examining the effects of experimentally-isolated A. karroo trees on the production of the surrounding grass sward, and vice versa. (2) Trees suppressed grass growth up to 9 m away. Tall trees generally suppressed grass growth more than shorter trees, while tree removal significantly decreased grass growth. (3) Grass growth was reduced by as much as 40% when trees were frequently defoliated. This unexpected counter-intuitive result was attributed to the stimulatory effect of defoliation on A. karroo increasing its competitiveness. (4) Neither tree size nor tree defoliation changed the shape of the pattern of grass production around the tree, although both changed its magnitude. (5) Tree production rose by 40% to 166% in response to sward removal, but was largely uninfluenced by sward defoliation. However, when the trees were harvested frequently, the production of browse increased significantly in response to frequent grass defoliation. (6) Some implications of these results for land managers are discussed." @default.
