• W2325363298 abstract "As delegated monitors, banks may incur substantial losses when the credit quality of their borrowers deteriorates. The credit risk shocks leading to bank distress may be caused by both domestic and foreign adverse economic events, especially in view of the increased international lending exposure of many banks headquartered in developed countries. We analyze the sensitivity of the stock returns of a large sample of banks in 20 industrialized countries to shifts in both regional and world credit risk, measured by corporate bond spreads. We examine whether or not geographic diversification, functional diversification, and capital provide banks with a structural protection against credit risk changes.
