Two implicit time discretizations are considered, namely the second-order backward differencing and the trapezoidal scheme. A Newton subiteration method together with the LU-SGS implicit scheme is used to solve the non-linear system at each time step. Simulations are performed using three flow configurations: an unstable laminar boundary layer, a turbulent boundary layer on a flat plate, and the turbulent. flow over an airfoil near stall. The implicit time integration is investigated in detail, considering the time discretization, the influence of the time step and the degree of convergence of the subiteration method.
