- W2326453134 abstract "A major insight of sociology that individuals with similar characteristics act and think differently when exposed to different situations. An important part of sociological inquiry to ask what situations encourage people to behave, think, or feel in particular ways-perhaps even in ways that might seem peculiar if only individual traits are considered. In the technical literature, this insight called effects. The idea has a long scholarly tradition, from Durkheim's discovery that Protestants are less likely to commit suicide in Catholic countries than in Protestant countries to Coleman's finding that poor children tend to do better when sent to schools with middle-class children than to schools with other poor children. The essential feature of all contextual-effects models is an allowance for macro processes that are presumed to have an impact on the individual actor over and above the effects of any individual-level variables that may be operating (Blalock 1984, p. 354). In the most basic attempt to construct a contextual-effects model, an individual-level dependent variable Y (e.g., the intensity of an attitude or behavior) correlated with an individual trait X (e.g., years of education). The strength of the association then compared to a recomputation of the correlation after controlling for a macrolevel variable Z; the macro variable may represent an organizational, geographical, or situational context, or it may represent a group mean on a micro-level variable. Analyses combining individual and contextual (social structural or situational) variables bridge the micro and macro levels of analysis. That is, they provide a concrete" @default.
