- W2326577511 abstract "The subject of epidemiology and its intersection with New World slavery has garnered the attention of several scholars, most notably Sharla Fett, S. Max Edelson, Todd Savitt, J. R. McNeil, and Elizabeth Fenn. Peter McCandless’s Slavery, Disease, and Suffering in the Southern Lowcountry builds upon this scholarship and offers thought-provoking insights, which further illuminate the impact of the microbe collision from Africa, Europe, and the Americas. Much more than a work of synthesis, this study challenges scholars to integrate the impact of diseases on the social, political, and economic milieu of America’s development. Moreover, McCandless provides a structured conceptual framework for understanding the mutually antagonistic forces, which established the Carolina lowcountry as an unhealthy and diseased-ridden region. Synthesizing evidence from contemporary documents and accounts written by residents, travelers, and visitors, McCandless argues that “lowcountry diseases were not a natural result of the region’s climate and topography. Human action—voluntary and forced migration and alterations of the environment—made the region unhealthy” (p. 278). More importantly, McCandles's study underscores how the insatiable desire for wealth and profit produced denials about the human costs of the plantation economy for South Carolina, the South, and the nation." @default.
