- W2326711292 abstract "Surface profilometry is used to characterize the statistical variation of the geometry of fretting pads machined to nominally similar geometries. A detailed study is performed on the effect of contact surface profiles variation on contact tractions, subsurface stresses and fretting fatigue life of the components. Measured profiles of contact surfaces along with experimentally obtained fretting fatigue load sets are used in calculating contact tractions, stresses and life prediction parameters. A nominally clamped dogbone specimen with flat and rounded edge indenters subjected to small amplitude oscillatory motion is a representation of fretting fatigue conditions existent in dovetail joints in gas turbine engines. Normal probability distribution of stress analysis and life prediction data are checked before statistically analyzing the data. It is found that under the same fretting fatigue loading, there are significant variations in tractions and subsurface level stresses due to differences among actual machined contact surface profiles. The coefficient of variation of multiaxial equivalent stress parameter, crack nucleation and propagation life cycles due to variations among machined contact surface profiles are shown to be as large as 5%, 20% and 10%, respectively. It is also observed that the components subjected to higher fretting fatigue load exhibit smaller coefficient of variation." @default.
