- W2326848904 abstract "Rethinking the Unity and Reception of Luke and Acts opens with a confession from no lesser light than François Bovon. With a bold stroke, Bovon ushers in a volume assaulting the critical consensus to which he himself is party; he acknowledges that he had not previously given sufficient credence to the minority view that Luke and Acts are not two parts of a single work generally referred to as ‘Luke–Acts’. Without abandoning his previous position, Bovon ushers readers into the debate on whether or not Luke and Acts should be regarded as interlocking chapters of a single story. Rethinking the Unity and Reception of Luke and Acts (henceforth, Rethinking) proceeds in three parts, the first of which is a detailed Forschungsgeschichte. Michael Bird’s essay ‘The Unity of Luke–Acts in Recent Discussion’ (ch. 1) plunges the reader into the wake of Mikael Parsons and Richard Pervo’s Rethinking the Unity of Luke and Acts (1993). Parsons and Pervo had contended that Luke and Acts should be construed as distinct works. This book (to which the title of the present volume tips its hat) was the first real challenge to the hyphen in ‘Luke–Acts’, a punctuation mark that has been in vogue since Henry Cadbury argued that the Lukan books constituted a single, unified work. Still, in the 1990s, the academy evinced little intention to follow Parsons and Pervo’s lead. Bird assiduously details the ensuing decade of research, enumerating a veritable ‘Who’s Who’ list of Lukan scholars who resisted Parsons and Pervo’s thesis, before bringing into the light the controversial resumption of the debate in Journal for the Study of the New Testament, vols. 28 and 29 (on which see below). Bird closes with comments regarding what is at stake in this reassessment of the hyphen in Luke–Acts, and his comments are proved prescient by the subsequent chapters of Rethinking." @default.
