- W2327338347 abstract "Among the various cellulose decomposing organisms which commonly occur in soils are several species of the genus Cytophaga. Relatively little is known of this particular genus. The sixth edition of Bergey's manual6) lists seven species of Cytophaga which inhabit the soil and three species which inhabit sea water. None of the species listed by Bergey is known to be pathogenic. Garnjobst 4) described a bacterium believed to be the cause of a distinct dermal disease of freshwater fishes, which she named C. columnaris (Davis) Garnj. This organism, therefore, became the first member of the genus known to be pathogenic. The Cytophagas are aerobic, gram-negative rods ranging from 3 to 12 microns long and 0.5 to 1 micron in diameter.(2) These rods are highly flexible. The ends are somewhat pointed. These organisms occur principally upon decaying wood, in soil, on dead leaves, straw, and dung. Most species show a temperature range from 100 to 300C with an optimum range of 250 to 300C. The colonies of the soil forms exhibit a mucoid appearance due to the formation of a slimy, glutinous, carbohydrate secretion. This slime produced by the cell is not protoplasmic'6' but is probably synthesized from low molecular end products of the hydrolytic cleaving of cellulose molecules.'l) Flagella have not been observed in Cytophaga nor have they been described in the order. 2) The Cytophagas exhibit a creeping and flexing type of motility. The exact mechanism of their motility is not known.'6 Garnjobstc4' states that without temperature control, the soil Cytophagas rate of movement is approximately 150 /t per minute, while Frobisher(2)" @default.
