- W2327622012 abstract "A contributor to this stimulating collection observes that ‘Castration is a topic that both repels and interests’ (p. 29); the same might be said of this book, which is not for the squeamish. The physical pain to which its graphic descriptions attest is almost always experienced by men or boys, but attention is also drawn to the emotional distress of women, including a pregnant nun forced to castrate her lover ‘with her own hands’ (p. 18). Despite its title, the book is not only about medieval castration, but is ‘the first extended study to examine castration in the context of ancient, medieval, and early modern cultures together’ (p. 27). The geographical range is also wide, with quotations from many ancient and medieval languages (all except Middle English are translated for non-specialists). Two frequently recurring castrates appear first in Tracy’s introduction: the church father Origen and the twelfth-century scholar Abelard, famously punished for his relationship with Heloise. Tracy’s discussion of Abelard’s life and work raises many of the issues taken up in subsequent essays. Extensive notes on the history of castration make Kathryn Reusch’s pioneering essay on its archaeology an effective first chapter. Archaeological traces of castration are inevitably limited, but there is potential for an archaeology of the tools employed." @default.
