- W2327690851 abstract "(1) Two rice species, Oryza sativa and 0. glaberrima, are often found growing together in farmers' fields in West Africa. The effects of species coexistence in a plant community on the interactions between plants were studied using four strains of these two sympatric species collected from upland and lowland fields in Nigeria. They were tested by mixture-diallel and substitutive experiments under different water conditions. (2) Neighbour effects on growth performances differed markedly according to strain combinations as well as water regime. In general, lowland strains were stronger competitors compared to upland strains. (3) In mixtures of the two species collected from the same field, 0. sativa was more strongly competitive than 0. glaberrima under wet conditions but not always under dry conditions. In mixtures of upland sympatric strains especially, the competitive relationship tended to be reversed by water regime. (4) Lowland sympatric strains, on the other hand, showed a Relative Yield Total significantly higher than unity, suggesting avoidance of competition." @default.
