- W2327693635 abstract "The portal of Saint John the Baptist on the Cathedral of Saint Stephen at Sens (Yonne) is one of the most significant examples of hagiographic iconography and monumental sculpture at the end of the twelfth century. The twenty-three scenes in the voussoirs and tympanum devoted to his life are the fruit of an ambitious intellectual conception closely linked to the history of Christianity at Sens and its integration in the new cathedral. The reliefs are only slightly restored and only the jamb statues have been lost ; the formal vocabulary is that of the workshops at Mantes-la-Jolie, but the sculptures evoke the aspirations and responses of the work of Nicolas de Verdun. The study of the portal of Saint John provides the opportunity to reconsider the activity of programmers and sculptors working on an urban site." @default.
