- W2327747215 abstract "HE hemagglutination inhibition (HI) and serum neutralization (SN) titers of Newcastle disease (ND) in chickens are often interpreted as a degree of immunity. Nevertheless serological titers have not always proved to be correlated with the resistance of various systems to challenge (Bankowski et al., 1958a). An immunity to ND of practical significance must include: a) resistance against death; b) resistance to infection of the respiratory tract; c) resistance against symptoms involving the central nervous system, including activity, decreased feed consumption, or other signs of abnormal behavior; d) resistance against reduced production; and e) an extended duration of such resistances (Bankowski et al., 1958a; Bankowski and Corstvet, 1960). In evaluating immune response following vaccination one must also take into account the age and condition of the birds, and passive and residual immunity, which may influence the maximum antigenic response of a given strain of virus. It was concluded from previous studies that field exposure of chickens to an infected environment could best be simulated by introducing susceptible, artificially infected birds into the same pen or room. It was also shown that protection against a pause in egg production and the duration of such resistance are sensitive criteria of immune response to vaccination (Bankowski et al., 1958a). The following experiment was devised to determine the influence of residual resistance at an early age upon the" @default.
