- W2327771214 abstract "Two closely related fish species, Pomatoschistus minutes (Pallas) and P. microps (Kr0yer), live sympatrically on some shallow bottoms along the Swedish coast. Field samples showed that P. minutes was found in both the open and vegetated habitat while P. microps occurred mostly in open areas. In two kinds of laboratory experiments, in which the fish were offered a choice of habitat only and a choice of a combination of habitat and food, we examined if and how these species segregate. We found that P. minutes chose the two habitat types in equal proportions and was not influenced by the presence of P. microps. It ate of both prey items but seemed to prefer chironomid larvae to amphipods. On the other hand, P. microps, preferred the vegetated habitat and always took most of its food in that habitat. Food consumption rates were the same when each species was alone and when both were together. A certain amount of segregation thus occurs in sympatry because one of the species retreats into a subset of its entire niche, but there is nothing like complete segregation." @default.
