• W2327831172 abstract "Introduction: Patient daily goal sheets and checklists have been shown to decrease length of stay, decrease medical errors and improve compliance with hospital policies. These tools are used intermittently and may not represent the dynamic nature of care delivery in the intensive care unit setting. Real time quality dashboards have not been examined in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). Methods: An electronic health record (EHR) query tool extracted EHR data from PICU patients to provide a real-time visual display showing compliance with patient safety activities. The display included data on presence of consent for treatment, restraint orders and deep venous thrombosis (DVT) prophylaxis. Baseline compliance and duration of noncompliance with these activities were established prior to, and one month following, the activation of the dashboard. The early follow-up period was chosen prior to a formal in-servicing of the dashboard in an attempt to determine any impact from the technology alone. Results: There were 295 total patients included in the analysis equally divided pre and post intervention. Subjects in the two time periods were similar in age, race, gender and mortality. The median time from admission to attainment of caregiver consent was 327 minutes in the pre-intervention time period and 219 minutes in the post-intervention time period. Though this was clinically significant, it did not reach statistical significance. There were no significant differences in compliance rates for DVT prophylaxis or restraint orders between time periods. Conclusions: A unit-wide dashboard can increase awareness for potential interventions affecting patient safety in the PICU in a dynamic manner. As PICUs expand in size, the central location of the dashboard broadcasts patients who are not in compliance with safety activities to the entire staff. As opposed to daily goal sheets that are often only reviewed on rounds, the dashboard updates in real-time and can be viewed around the clock.
