- W2327838958 abstract "The relationship between language and experience is a problematic one. In Tropics of Discourse, Hayden White distinguishes between two groups of historians: Those who think that language can serve as a perfectly transparent medium of representation, who think that if one can only find the right language for describing events, the meaning of the events will display itself to consciousness, and those historians, by contrast, whose work displays the ironic recognition that any given linguistic protocol will obscure as much as it reveals about the reality it seeks to capture in an order of words.' It is, I think, still possible to analyze experience, material experience, without ignoring the complicated relationship between experience and language-even if the ways we connect one thing to another, or use one thing to represent another, create meaning in themselves and are thus ideological, even if our identification of the field of inquiry before we interpret it constitutes an act of interpretation in itself. To further complicate matters, if on one level language cannot represent any experience directly, some experiences, such as fascism and the Holocaust, are even less available for representation, are especially resistant to logical, linear description." @default.
