- W2327976645 abstract "To reduce the cost associated with current microgravity testing methods, NASA recently proposed using a more cost effective flight platform capable of conducting microgravity testing on small equipment. NASA’s proposed platform is the commercially-available Troybuilt “DV8R” remote-controlled jet aircraft. This wind tunnel research effort defined the baseline aerodynamic and stability characteristics for this previously uncharacterized vehicle. In addition, the control power and cross-control derivatives were defined along with the maneuverability envelope which identified the load factor limitations of the aircraft based on weight and center of gravity parameters. A 1⁄4 scale wind tunnel model was used for the evaluation at Mach numbers from 0.2 to 0.35 in the USAFA Subsonic Wind Tunnel. The results of this effort provided the inputs to define the aerodynamic characteristics needed for a 6 Degree of Freedom simulation. The maneuverability envelope should be a cornerstone for development of feasible parabolic flight trajectories for the microgravity mission. At angles of attack above approximately 10 , initial stall characteristics were observed along with a significant decrease in Lift-over-Drag and a significant drop off in elevator, aileron, and rudder control power derivative magnitude. Thus, a concern was identified for operation of the aircraft above 10 angle of attack and a recommendation was made to limit operation of the aircraft to angles of attack below 10 . The maneuverability envelope indicated that the aircraft should be capable of flying the parabolic arc associated with the microgravity mission, with a maximum load factor capability ranging from 2.5 to 12.5 G’s based on loading conditions. Additionally, a supplemental investigation was performed on a canard attachment to determine if addition of a canard could enable the DV8R to achieve higher load factors at high-weight, forward-CG loading conditions. To complement the aerodynamic definition of the aircraft accomplished in this effort, it was recommended that the structural loading limits of the aircraft be defined and used to adjust the maneuverability envelope.
