- W2328061199 abstract "It has been said often and much better by others that Ernest W. Burgess was a renaissance person. His interests were not highly specialized and focused, as found today among great sociologists and psychologists. To the contrary, his interests were varied; and as a person for all seasons, he was claimed by many disciplines. In the area of urban sociology, he promulgated the concept of the concentric circles of urban development and migration, a theory which he attempted to adapt to the streets and sidewalks of Chicago. The presentation of this notion stimulated a birthquake of theoretical development and research in the field of urban sociology. Those who worked with this concept soon found that it did not apply literally and urbanologists developed interesting modifications. One was that movement of people out of the central city was not concentric but rather dispersal occurring along radial streets. Location was a function more related to socioeconomic status, class position, education, and occupation than to successive waves of immigrants. While he held these research interests in the city and its people, he never really liked living in it and preferred the countryside. Criminology, the study of crime and criminal justice was another special area in which Ernest Burgess received recognition. He worked with others of the famous Chicago school in doing empirical work and theorizing on the development of gangs, deviant and criminal behavior. Along with Park, Anderson and Shaw, he developed a school of thought that has had profound impact upon later day experts in this specialty area. Yet, Dr. Burgess was hardly a criminal and, in fact, never received even a parking ticket during his lifetime. In the early days when gerontology was a new and upcoming field with a paucity of investigators or concerned persons, Burgess was already recognized as a star. In a classic paper, Burgess describes the roleless role of the aged person-a phrase to be used repeatedly by succeeding generations of scholars-a condition that describes a sizeable minority of persons over 75 years of age (1952). Yet, Burgess never lived this role. He continued a full life with his research and scholarship to the very last breath of life." @default.
