- W2328132380 abstract "While it is relatively common to track weight (wt) maintenance, physical activity (PA), and metabolic health following wt loss, follow-up after a wt loss, wt regain intervention has not been previously reported. PURPOSE: The purpose of this investigation was to examine whether changes in wt and metabolic health at the completion of a supervised wt loss, wt regain intervention study were maintained at one year follow-up and whether PA level influenced the maintenance of these parameters. METHODS: Thirty-three subjects from a wt loss, wt regain intervention (n = 67) returned for follow-up 12-18 months following wt regain. The parent study included a 4-6 month wt loss period followed by 4-6 months of controlled wt regain. At follow-up, subjects were classified as either active (ACT) or inactive (INACT) based on an estimated energy expenditure division of 1400 kcal/wk. Body wt, waist circumference (WC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP), abdominal and thigh computed tomography scans for adipose tissue (AT), and blood samples to assess insulin sensitivity (IS), triglycerides (TG), cholesterols, and C-reactive protein (CRP) were collected. Results were analyzed by 2-way ANOVA to determine if differences were maintained at follow-up from baseline (BL) and from post wt regain (PWR) and if differences existed between ACT and INACT. RESULTS: The decreased body wt from BL to PWR was not significant at follow-up, but there was a trend (p = 0.057) to maintain wt in ACT (94.9 ± 4.0 to 95.7 ± 4.5 kg) and a trend (p = 0.053) to increase wt in INACT (89.0 ± 3.6 to 92.6 ± 4.0 kg). Total abdominal AT was maintained in ACT (483.4 ± 32.1 to 477.6 ± 34.8 cm2) but not INACT (531.1 ± 36.8 to 597.6 ± 44.2 cm2), as was visceral AT in ACT (112.7 ± 12.2 to 111.0 ± 15.7 cm2) but not INACT (122.9 ± 13.8 to 146.1 ± 15.8 cm2). Systolic BP was not maintained, and diastolic BP increased in both groups. Changes in WC, IS, TG, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and thigh AT were not maintained. No changes were seen in HR, WHR, CRP, total cholesterol, or low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. CONCLUSION: PA influences the ability to maintain some but not all of the positive metabolic changes seen after a wt loss, wt regain intervention. Overall, ACT better maintain beneficial metabolic changes while INACT regress in metabolic health. Funded by NIH DK067036." @default.
