- W2328305372 abstract "This paper is concerned with the behavior termed absolute by some writers. It is an attempt to relate the absolute phenomenon to other areas of present-day psychology. Through a reinterpretation of the facts, and by dealing only with the facts, an explanation is suggested which utilizes principles consistent with those found in other behaviorial events.' In absolute the organism and a tonal stimulus both participate in a psychological interaction. The organism is such that it can react to auditory stimuli-it has ears. In other words, the fact that the organism has ears permits it to react to sounds. The other participant in this interaction, the tone, has several characteristics; e.g., duration, intensity, timbre, etc., which may influence the total interaction; but in absolute the organism reacts primarily to the pitch of the tone. The organism reacts to the tonal stimulus by labeling it A, G#, C, etc. If these labels are virtually always correct, the person is said to possess absolute pitch. If the labels are not usually correct, the person is said not to possess absolute pitch.' It would seem that we have nothing here deserving of the title absolute. Rather in this instance we have two different degrees of accuracy at pitch-naming. The term reaction will be used in this paper to denote the behavior of the organism in the pitchnaming interaction. As is the case with all other behaviorial events, the pitch-naming interaction always involves primarily two variables (6)-the total organism and a tonal stimulus. Thus our explanation must be made in terms of both variables-not in terms of only one variable or part of a variable. For example, this interaction cannot be explained exclusively in terms of the ear or brain of the organism, for no excised ear or brain performs pitch-naming reactions. Similarly, any explanation made only in terms of the organism is inadequate, since no organism performs pitch-naming reactions without being in contact with a tonal stimulus. An adequate" @default.
