- W2328407103 abstract "Through an integrated study to assess the pathways of water, sediments and nutrients (nitrogen, carbon and phosphorus) over scales from a hillslope to a small catchment, field experiments are taking place on a dairy farm located in a headwater catchment in south-east Victoria, Australia. Since the field site is an engineered environment, some of the pathways have been modified from their natural state and we consider here two examples that facilitate either attenuation or generation. Firstly, farm tracks, which are used daily by livestock to access the milking facilities from the paddocks where the stock graze, are thought to be significant sources during rainfall events and also provide runoff pathways connecting sources to streams. Secondly, a large farm dam (storage pond) was constructed by damming a stream to store water for use in the dairy. Ongoing field monitoring commenced in 2009 to determine whether these features were sources or sinks (attenuators) of sediments and nutrients. It was found that farm tracks are important sources and transport pathways during runoff events, but that the farm dam was attenuating sediments and most nutrient species. These results have important implications for the management of on-farm engineered features." @default.
