- W2328808655 abstract "Seasonally rigid (non-cyclic) and flexible (cyclic) third chromosome polymorphisms have been described in neighboring populations of Drosophila pseudoobscura (for the latest summary and additional references, see Dobzhansky, 1971). A particular gene arrangement such as AR has been shown to have a different genetic constitution in different regions and even in different localities within the same region (Dobzhansky, 1948b, 1950). This helps to explain the inconsistent association of rigid and flexible polymorphisms with different environments, and also the average differences in chromosome frequencies among localities. Thus Dobzhansky (1948a) has suggested that third chromosome genes in certain populations may permit a cyclic response to changing seasons, while in other populations they may not. We will describe a new case of seasonally rigid and flexible third chromosome polymorphisms in closely situated popuilations of D. pseudoobscura. This example is different from earlier ones in that the rigid and flexible populations are not located on an elevational transect (e.g., the Yosemite region of central California) or" @default.
