At one time, hunting and gathering provided the main sources of livelihood over much of tropical Africa, but in most areas,S they gave way long ago to farming. They are still of vital importance to some very small groups, and a subsidiary source of food and other requirements over wide areas, but their relative importance continues to decline. Tropical Africa has large stocks of fish in its rivers and lakes and also around its shores, but as yet they are not very fully exploited and the region accounts for only about 4% of the world's total catch. However, fish is a popular item of diet for most people and provided it is available at sufficiently low prices, it is much in demand. Most countries in eastern Africa, from Ethiopia to Mozambique, have sufficient forest resources to satisfy most local needs but not to support large-scale felling for export." @default.
