- W2329566964 abstract "The purpose of this study was to elucidate the iodine binding factors (IBF) of human saliva in relation to the color fading phenomenon in intraoral application of Polyvinylpyrrolidone-iodine (PVP-I). Experiments were conducted in vitro on the reaction of I2 with saliva and the relationship between the amounts of IBF and salivary proteins. The reaction of iodine with saliva stabilized after 10min at 37°C. The level of IBF in parotid saliva was higher than that of whole saliva. The level in the initial fraction of parotid saliva obtained by continuous stimulation with lemon candy was higher than successive other fractions. This level of IBF in parotid saliva was gradually decreased by continuous stimulation. The ratio of IBF/total protein in saliva was higher than in serum. Although age-specific distributions of IBF level in whole saliva were not clearly demonstrated, the total protein level in whole saliva of the subjects aged 10-12yr (elementary school children) revealed highly significant difference (P<0.01) compared with the subjects aged 3-5yr and the adult group (22-45yr). The IBF in saliva passed through membrane filter (pore size: 0.45μ). Moreover, there was almost no IBF left in the sediments of centrifugated saliva (10, 000×g). These results suggested that the IBF was derived from part of the dissolving substrate in saliva and it might be attributed to an iodinophile characteristic of saliva." @default.
