- W2329571077 abstract "BACKGROUND: To evaluate perception of vaginal reconstructive surgery in women presenting for vaginal rejuvenation/vaginoplasty procedure (VR) for vaginal laxity and decreased vaginal sensation with intercourse compared to women presenting for standard prolapse repair. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study with 135 sexually-active women who presented with either vaginal laxity requesting VR or symptomatic pelvic organ prolapse (prolapse group), and which follows their responses to questionnaires developed by Pardo, et al,1 and modified by our institute. Questions were non-matching from preoprative and postoperative tools. All patients completed the questionnaire taken preoperatively and at minimum 6 months postoperatively. RESULTS: Of 135 patients who met the inclusion criteria, 130 subjects had completed both preoperative and postoperative questionnaire (n=77 VR, n=53 prolapse). The VR group was younger (mean age 43.57±7.93 vs. 53.68±8.47, p <0.001).The VR group was more likely to report having relaxed vagina (90.79% vs. 72.55%, p=0.007), partner’s perception of relaxed vagina (76.06% vs. 52.38%, p=0.010), and decreased vaginal sensation (88.89% vs. 71.70%, p=0.014). VR group was more likely to feel loss of physical attraction (65.71% vs. 44.68%, p=0.024) and rejection from the partner (31.43% vs. 10.64%, p=0.009). 82.81% of VR and 100% of prolapse group deciding to undergo vaginal surgery was supported by their partner (p=0.021). VR group was more likely to have had previous plastic surgery (63.64% vs. 28.89%, p<0.001). Only 36.33% from the VR group and 47.73% from the prolapse group had previously discussed the feelings of vaginal relaxation with any physicians. Interestingly, 72% of prolapse patients perceived they had a wide/relaxed vagina and 42% of the group listed a “tighter vagina” as a personal expectation of surgery. For postoperative evaluation, 83.56% of VR group and 60% of prolapse group believed that their sexual life improved after surgery (p=0.003). More than 90% of both groups reported that surgical expectations were met. CONCLUSIONS: Patients presenting VR believe that vaginal laxity is affecting their sexual function a greater amount than patients presenting for prolapse surgery, however in both groups sexual function did seem to be affected by their condition. Post operatively both groups’ expectations were met by surgery and overall sexual function was improved including sensation and orgasm, however the VR group was found to have a significantly higher level of overall improvement compared to standard prolapse repair." @default.
