- W2329804569 abstract "Abstract The forms of rock slopes developed on the quartzitic sandstones of the folded Cape Supergroup strata are explained with reference to rock mass strength and the characteristics of rock masses. Initially rock slopes are classified into structure-dependent categories within which it is possible to recognise strength-equilibrium, structural and denudational forms. Strength-equilibrium forms are shown to be dependent upon intact rock strength and the spacing of partings in the rock, and their presence in an area where structural control could be expected to dominate adds support to the contention of the widespread occurence of strength-equilibrium forms. The roughness of partings is shown to be an important control of form on structurally controlled slopes, and the past dominance of surface processes is indicated by the presence of denudational forms. Parallel retreat is shown to be a possible mode of slope development where surface processes are active at the base of a slope even if rock mass strength is not uniform into the rock mass." @default.
