- W2329855756 abstract "The Chinese hamster (Cricetulus griseus) is introduced as an experimental host for the bile duct tapeworm (Hymenolepis microstoma). This experimental system provides a unique tool for the study of immune relationships to lumen-dwelling parasites. Chinese hamsters permitted maturation of H. microstoma to egg production, but eliminated all worms after about 46 days of infection. Biliary and duodenal hypertrophy tended to regress after self-cure. Treatment with cortisone substantially suppressed expression of the immune response. Abdominal granuloma induced by inoculation (intraperitoneal) of hamsters with complete Freund's adjuvant resulted in a corresponding immunosuppression. Methotrexate treatment gave equivocal results which were probably complicated by the drug's toxicity to host and/or parasite. It was suggested that one of the effects of the latter drug was depression of host immunity. Although the bile duct tapeworm (Hymenolepis microstoma) has no tissue phase in its definitive host, it has been shown to elicit early and persistent antibody response in the infected mouse (Foster, 1965; Tan and Jones, 1968). Tan and Jones (1968), using implants of x-irradiated H. microstoma as immunizing agents, found that treated animals developed resistance to reinfection. Despite the prompt development of specific immune response to this cestode, self-cure (Stoll, 1928) rarely ensues, at least in the mouse. Two Ouchterlony precipitin bands to extracts of adult H. microstoma have been found using sera from mice still harboring an average of 660 mg (wet weight) of worms after 9 months of infection (Ritterson, unpublished). The present study introduces the Chinese hamster (Cricetulus griseus) as a new experimental host for H. microstoma. In this animal, there is developed a curative immunity during primary infection which is adversely affected by several dissimilar immunosuppressive treat-" @default.
