- W2330082647 abstract "There is a lot of talk about difference these days. Myra Jehlen recently described it as of the key-words of the current analytical discourse.1 While abstracted theorists have spun the discourse on difference to dizzying heights, back in the language classroom we grapple with a more pedestrian matter. Is there a relatively simple yet clear way to explain to students coming from English to German when to translate as ander- and when as verschieden? The problem is hardly apparent in contemporary English,2 until one has to translate, for example, the title of Elizabeth Hollander's article, Subject Matter: Models for Different Media.3 Is that Medien or uerschiedene Medien? Brigitte M. Turneaure's Der treffende Ausdruck asks students, after having given them ambiguous examples such as Die Briider sind recht verschieden, to fill in the blank in the sentences Es gibt natiirlich viele Ansichten dariiber.4 The Collins German-English / English-German Dictionary gives as an example for andere the familiar Andere I~inder, Sitten and glosses this as countries have different customs.'5 Just try giving students countries have different customs to translate into German and see how many nevertheless will employ verschieden as the adjective! And before deriding them, check out R. B. Farrell's examples: Verschiedene Leute haben verschiedene Interessen, which is followed with Andere Leute haben Interessen.6 While it is easy for speakers of German to know when to use which sense of different, they rarely can cite a decision rule. It is even harder to explain in simple terms to learners of German. Even the often helpful Farrell is less than lucid in explaining the distinction:" @default.
