- W2330294320 abstract "This paper presents a review of previously published literature on the behavior of fluids under nonuniform magnetic fields. Sufficiently large magnetic gradient fields have been shown to influence both fluid and combustion behavior. However, much of this influence may be due to interactions of electric fields surrounding electromagnets with the fluid, rather than the pure magnetic field itself. Possible applications for the use of magnetic fields in fluid and combustion control are identified. A scale analysis is performed on appropriately nondimensionalized forms of the governing equations for a planar jet issuing into a quiescent fluid Specifically, it is found that gravitational acceleration sets a minimum threshold for magnetic field and gradient strength that is independent of the flow velocity. Also, it is found that the minimum strengths are proportional to velocity for convective terms, and proportional to the square of velocity for the diftisive terms. This reveals the necessary conditions under which the magnetically induced body force term could influence the jet behavior. It also indicates that the use of magnetic fields may provide an effective means of controlling low Reynolds number flows in microgravity environments. Areas for future research are identified." @default.
