- W2330320848 abstract "In Colored Cosmopolitanism Nico Slate examines the reformers, politicians, intellectuals, soldiers, and ministers, among others, who forged connections between the Indian independence movement and the African American fight against Jim Crow. This transpacific relationship is well known today in Mohandas Gandhi's posthumous influence on Martin Luther King Jr., but the Gandhi-King link is only a small part of Slate's expansive story. That story illuminates the global dimensions of American antiracism and offers an eye-opening new perspective on the “long civil rights movement.” At another level, the book provides extensively researched historical grounding for the theories of cosmopolitanism put forth recently by political philosophers and cultural critics. In Slate's view, “colored cosmopolitans” occupied a middle ground especially fertile for transnational solidarities. The category is somewhat loosely defined, but in general, figures such as W. E. B. Du Bois, Gandhi, and the Indian reformer Kamaladevi Chattopadhyaya were cosmopolitan in their rejection of immutable differences based on race. At the same time, they were “cosmopolitans with a cause,” attempting “to articulate an inclusive humanism that defied narrow, chauvinist definitions of race, religion, or nation while simultaneously defending the unity of ‘colored’ peoples” (pp. 244, 66). The paradox inherent in an antiracist appeal to racial unity forms the fascinating intellectual puzzle at the heart of Slate's project." @default.
