- W2330361181 abstract "John Staudenmaier has provided a brilliant analysis of the directions of the history of technology during the first quarter-century of SHOT's existence. The title of his talk, SHOT Hath Wrought and What SHOT Hath Not, puts us perilously close to God. Naturally I am awed by the substitution of SHOT for God in the biblical quotation (Num. 23:23) whence Dr. Staudenmaier derived his title, but I realize that overweening pride (akin to the classical Greek hubris, whereby human beings sought to rival the status and power of the gods) enters into original sin. Hence, I leave it to Father Staudenmaier to cope with the blasphemous implications of his own title. When we get to the text of his talk, however, Dr. Staudenmaier is on much firmer ground. What he has to say regarding what SHOT has done and what we have not done is quite true, and he has also set down an agenda and challenge for the future-what remains to be doneand for this we are all grateful. My comments do not represent criticism or rebuttal of Staudenmaier's points. Instead, I want to amplify some of his remarks by explaining the sociocultural milieu from which SHOT emerged, including the mind-set of the historical profession and the nature of the historiography of technology. Such considerations might help explain what SHOT did and did not do, and why it did or didn't." @default.
