- W2330431165 abstract "ship is one of the most remarkable problems through its simplicity of formulation and its difficulty of solution. This area of study has required a huge effort from many researchers during the last century. The history of this problem is decorated with remarkable names and remarkable ideas. The total resistance of water to the movement of ships is a sum of hydrodynamic forces, affecting the wetted surface of a ship’s hull. Part of this force depends on the viscosity of the fluid, including the effects of friction and the normal stress due to viscosity. The other part is connected to gravitation and gives a wave component of resistance, creating around a hull two systems of waves, each of which is located in a semi-infinite wedge. The top of the first wedge is in the bow and top of the second one is in the stern of the ship’s hull. Both wave systems, as though glued, move together with the ship. During hull design it is necessary to consider two problems. The first is concerned with the possibility of exactly evaluating the total resistance of a ship with a specific hull form. For this purpose both numerical methods and model experiments in a tank are used. The second problem is a search for the hull form with the least resistance to water. This is accomplished by testing a series of ship models with different hull forms. The calculated or numerical methods in this case give only direction, and it is necessary to change the hull form to obtain the least resistance. One of the most amazing historical events in the middle of the twentieth century - a century of Cold and of World Wars - was the organization of an international scientific community working toward solutions to these problems." @default.
