- W2330735098 abstract "MIDWAY through the nineteenth century, in ‘To Marguerite–Continued’ (1852), Matthew Arnold gave voice to a feeling that was becoming common: loneliness. ‘Yes! In the sea of life enisled, / With echoing straits between us thrown, / Dotting the shoreless watery wild, / We mortal millions live alone.’ Although the deep loneliness entailed in philosophical scepticism had been in the air for a long time when Arnold wrote this, feelings of quotidian solitude seemed urgent in the Victorian period. For poets who were being pushed to the margins of the literary sphere by novelists, the nature of isolation obtained special importance. And, for this reason, literary and emotional techniques that promised an escape from the confinement of the self—empathy, analogy, identification, sympathy—attained comparable significance. In her impressively titled new monograph On Sympathy, Sophie Ratcliffe puts it like this: ‘Victorian poets were working in an atmosphere in which it seemed as if people were working at increasing distances from each other’ (78). According to Ratcliffe, whose argument about sympathy begins with the Victorians but concludes with the modernist experimentation of Beckett, the feeling of loneliness (and the demand for sympathy that attends it) hasn’t particularly diminished." @default.
