- W2331023992 abstract "T hough the Christian doctrine of providence is an enormous field of enquiry, one issue in particular continually proves both fascinating and contentious: the relation between divine and human agency. Alexander Jensen argues that the zero-sum game often played in discussions about providence, a game where the agency of one is diminished or even cancelled out by the agency of the other, is due to a fundamental category mistake, that of conceptualizing God as a cause among causes. Instead, God must be regarded as the source of all things, as utterly transcendent, and this from a properly trinitarian perspective. Jensen’s intentions are sound, his analysis is frequently sharp and insightful, and his conclusions should generate healthy dialogue. God, for Jensen, is Father, Son (or Logos), and Holy Spirit from all eternity; God is beyond creaturely time and space, and beyond creaturely freedom and agency; God is even beyond being itself. All that exists is the outcome of God’s eternal act of willing: the triune God wills to create a world that exists by participating in God’s being and nature. Moreover, from God’s eternal vantage point, God sees the divine plan for history unfold in time and space all at once; but this distance does not entail God’s absence from the world. Scripture points to God’s revelatory presence in Israel’s history, in the incarnate Logos, and in the Church, and to God’s hidden presence in everything else that transpires. As all things are granted existence and direction by participating in God, nothing can be said to happen apart from God. On this account, God is beyond the world but immanent within it through the Logos and the Spirit. Such mediation by the Logos and the Spirit is necessary to maintain the distinction between God and creation, a distinction conceptually safeguarded by analogical language when speaking of God. This language is most naturally expressed when the Church worships, that is, when the Church recognizes its dependence on God, and affirms God’s action as it experiences the presence of the risen Christ." @default.
