- W2331118346 abstract "We read with interest the publication in this journal by Aagard et al. 1 Aagard T. Roed C. Larsen A.R. Peterson A. Dahl B. Skinhøj et al. Long-term mortality after Staphylococcus aureus spondylodiscitis: a Danish nationwide population-based cohort study. J Infect. 2014; 69: 252-258 Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (22) Google Scholar which detailed long term mortality in adults diagnosed with Staphylococcus aureus spondylodiscitis. The authors found S. aureus spondylodiscitis to be associated with an increased risk of death, with impact on relative risk of mortality highest for patients in the youngest age quartile. 1 Aagard T. Roed C. Larsen A.R. Peterson A. Dahl B. Skinhøj et al. Long-term mortality after Staphylococcus aureus spondylodiscitis: a Danish nationwide population-based cohort study. J Infect. 2014; 69: 252-258 Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (22) Google Scholar In the absence of recent instrumentation of the spine, bacteraemia is a sine qua non of infective spondylodiscitis. Over the last decade in the United Kingdom the rate of methicillin-sensitive S. aureus has remained stable, however the rate of Gram negative bacteraemia (especially of Escherichia coli) has increased such that Gram negative bacteria now account for two thirds of all bacteraemias. Both S. aureus and E. coli bacteraemias affect elderly patients disproportionately. Estimates of the incidence of infective spondylodiscitis vary widely between 4 and 24 cases per million population annually, with a trend towards increasing incidence over time. 2 Digby J.M.
