- W2331190975 abstract "A comparison was made of the incidence of Trypanosoma avium in the blood and bone marrow of 677 Colorado birds in 139 species. Of 549 birds in 96 species, 334 had positive marrow and 215 had negative marrow. All 128 birds in 43 species showed no T. avium in the marrow. Of the 677 birds, only 33 had a trypanosome parasitemia, including four (two species) which had negative marrow. Individuals with trypanosome-positive marrow had nearly twice the incidence of other parasites in the blood (215 birds) as had those with negative marrow (115 birds). Forty-three of the 96 species with positive marrow represent new host records for T. avium. The sharp-tailed grouse, one of the two species which had flagellates in the blood only, also is a new host record. Previously we published data supporting the thesis that an accurate assay of avian trypanosomiasis can be obtained only by examining bone marrow rather than blood (Stabler, 1961a, b; Stabler and Holt, 1963). These data came from a relatively small number of species (nine). We present here information comparing the incidence of blood and bone marrow Trypanosoma avium from 139 species, including 677 individual birds in 44 families from 13 orders. MATERIALS AND METHODS All birds were from Colorado. Blood films were made from the snipped toenails of live birds and from the thoracic cavities of dead ones. The films were stained with Giemsa's stain. The marrow from the 677 birds was checked in Ringer's solution for living trypanosomes. Most marrow was examined within 5 to 6 hr after the death of the host. We have, however, found active T. avium in marrow from birds dead 24 hr. Marrow from femora or humeri was equally good, except in some raptors where these bones are nearly empty. Tibial marrow was used from these latter hosts." @default.
