Williams's career finished not with gestures of totalization, nostalgia, or yearning, but with a kind of caesura, an opening of a space impinging blocks of time and circumstance, a space in which everything is put into question, under the threat of erasure-a deconstructive space. Williams's life had been a series of caesuras, rhetorical intervals amid sometimes unbearable pressures; his later life reads, in Paul Mariani's account, like an ironic recapitulation of the medical histories he had encountered all his life in others: hernia, heart attack, stroke, depression, each successive shock responsible for a disabling pause that was also enabling in the sense that the physical crisis forced an artistic and emotional crisis. The stuttering, stepped-down lines of the late Williams are mimetic of the torsions the strokes inflicted on his speech and thought, the lines attempting wrap themselves around a thought process that continually outspeeds and eludes them (and Williams's last great poem is, as we shall see, much concerned with speed) (Kenner 541-42). But the traumatic intervals of Williams's last years were not barren: poised, as Asphodel has it, between the flash / and the thunderstroke, they let in the light, attempting, in Walter Benjamin's words, to seize hold of a memory as it flashes up at a moment of danger (Williams, Pictures 178; Benjamin 257).
